Hotels in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)

Stay in Barcelona's oldest streets – medieval palaces turned boutique stays, family-run guesthouses, and rooftop rooms above the cathedral bells. Every hotel is inside the Barri Gòtic or on its edge, checked on each hotel's own site.

The neighbourhood

Why stay in the Gothic Quarter?

Streets older than the city's memory

Walk the same narrow medieval streets that have existed for centuries. Roman walls, Gothic cloisters and hidden plazas sit behind every corner.

Everything within reach

Steps from Barcelona Cathedral, La Rambla and the harbour, with the city's best tapas bars, shops and museums on every street.

An address, not just a room

Many of these hotels occupy centuries-old palaces – stone archways and wrought-iron balconies are part of the stay, not a backdrop for it.

Serras Barcelona

Passeig de Colom, 9 – waterfront at the foot of the Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona

Serras is a five-star hotel at Passeig de Colom, 9, facing the Port Vell marina, at the point where the Barri Gòtic opens onto the sea. The hotel describes itself as a small property, and the room list reflects that: Superior rooms, then a Junior Suite laid out like a loft, a Junior Suite Marina, a Suite Mediterráneo and a Grand Suite Mediterráneo with three balconies over the Mediterranean and a fourth onto the Gothic Quarter. There is a rooftop with sea and city views, a restaurant called Informal, and a bar lounge, Le Nine. The hotel states the building housed Picasso's first studio in 1896, where he painted Ciencia y Caridad; other sources place that studio on Carrer de la Plata and date the painting to 1897, so treat the location claim with caution.

Hotel Neri courtyard with medieval stone arches and terrace, Gothic Quarter Barcelona Exceptional
9.3 / 10 our score

Couples who want a small historic building on a quiet square and do not need a pool or a gym

Hotel Neri

Carrer de Sant Sever, 5, on Plaça Sant Felip Neri – heart of the Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona

Hotel Neri occupies a 12th-century medieval palace at Carrer de Sant Sever, 5, opening onto the small square of Plaça Sant Felip Neri, and the hotel's own site puts its size at 22 rooms and suites. The old courtyard was recovered in the restoration. The top floor is Roba Estesa, a planted terrace rather than a pool, and 'a' Restaurant on the ground floor is the only restaurant on the square, run by chef Alain Guiard. The building has no lift, so the size of the top-floor rooms and the top-floor terrace is worth checking before you book.

Frequently asked questions about staying in the Gothic Quarter

Is the Gothic Quarter a good area to stay in Barcelona?

Yes. The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) is the historic cultural heart of Barcelona. Staying here puts you within easy walking distance of major sights like Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça del Rei, and La Rambla, surrounded by century-old tapas bars and artisan boutiques.

Is the Gothic Quarter noisy at night?

Because streets are pedestrianised, there is virtually no motor traffic noise. However, narrow stone alleys can echo lively pedestrian chatter. Boutique hotels in historic squares (like Plaça Sant Felip Neri) or rooms facing inner courtyards provide exceptionally peaceful nights.

How far is the Gothic Quarter from the beach and airport?

Barceloneta beach is a scenic 15–20 minute stroll or a 5-minute metro ride from Jaume I station. Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is approximately 30 minutes away via the Aerobús from nearby Plaça Catalunya.

What types of hotels are available in the Barri Gòtic?

The neighborhood is famous for restored medieval and Art Deco palaces turned into luxury boutique hotels with intimate rooftop plunge pools, as well as charming mid-range guesthouses and historic hostels.
