Hotels with a Barcelona Cathedral view

A cathedral view means three different things in the Gòtic: the Cathedral filling your bedroom window, the Cathedral on the horizon from a rooftop, or the Cathedral one street away with a blank wall outside the glass. Which one you want depends on how you use the room.

Catalonia Catedral hotel near Barcelona Cathedral, Gothic Quarter Barcelona Superb
8.8 / 10 our score

Anyone who wants the Cathedral in view from a rooftop, and who does not mind a hotel running a full restaurant and events programme

Catalonia Catedral

Carrer dels Arcs, 10 – between Plaça Catalunya and the Cathedral, 08002 Barcelona

Catalonia Catedral opened at the end of 2009 in a building from 1910 whose salmon-coloured façade is a noted piece of Viennese Secessionist modernism in Barcelona. Inside, the arrival is the inner courtyard, painted with a mural of a Gothic church complete with stained glass and a rose window. The roof has a pool, a solarium and views of the Cathedral, and the first floor holds the Ascent restaurant. It sits between Plaça Catalunya and the Cathedral, with Els Quatre Gats, the Boqueria and the Liceu all within a few minutes.

Hotel Neri courtyard with medieval stone arches and terrace, Gothic Quarter Barcelona Exceptional
9.3 / 10 our score

Couples who want a small historic building on a quiet square and do not need a pool or a gym

Hotel Neri

Carrer de Sant Sever, 5, on Plaça Sant Felip Neri – heart of the Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona

Hotel Neri occupies a 12th-century medieval palace at Carrer de Sant Sever, 5, opening onto the small square of Plaça Sant Felip Neri, and the hotel's own site puts its size at 22 rooms and suites. The old courtyard was recovered in the restoration. The top floor is Roba Estesa, a planted terrace rather than a pool, and 'a' Restaurant on the ground floor is the only restaurant on the square, run by chef Alain Guiard. The building has no lift, so the size of the top-floor rooms and the top-floor terrace is worth checking before you book.

Lamaro is a five-star hotel at Avinguda de la Catedral 7, directly opposite the west front of Barcelona Cathedral, in a grand neoclassical building. Only two room categories, the Premium Suite and the Grand Master Suite, have guaranteed views of the Cathedral, and the Grand Master Suite has four balconies. Room view or rooftop view?

This is the first question, and it is the one booking pages blur. A room view is what you look at from bed, and it is priced hardest. A rooftop view is what you get for fifteen minutes in the evening with a drink, and it is usually included in the rate for everyone staying in the building.

If you will be out from morning until late and use the room to sleep, the rooftop view is the better buy even before the price difference. If the trip is about the room itself — a milestone, a proposal, a birthday — then a room facing the Cathedral is the one upgrade in this quarter that is genuinely hard to replicate.

The six

  • Hotel Barcelona Catedral. Carrer dels Capellans, directly behind the Cathedral. The most literal cathedral-adjacent address in the guide: a rooftop pool, a sun terrace with hammocks and a rooftop gym. Ask specifically for a room with the Cathedral outlook, because the same building also has interior rooms.
  • H10 Madison. Carrer del Doctor Joaquim Pou, metres from the Cathedral, with the Cathedral in view from the rooftop and a terrace bar beside the heated plunge pool. This is the one to book if you want the photograph rather than the window.
  • Catalonia Catedral. Carrer dels Arcs, between Plaça Catalunya and the Cathedral. A seasonal rooftop pool and solarium, a mural courtyard and a Japanese garden terrace. The name is doing more work than the building here — the roofs are the part that earns it.
  • Hotel Neri. Carrer de Sant Sever on Plaça Sant Felip Neri, a two-minute walk from the Cathedral and close enough for its bells, with a planted rooftop terrace, Roba Estesa, rather than a pool. The view from the roof is over the old quarter, and on a quiet square this is the closest you get to having both the Cathedral and an unbroken night.
  • H10 Cubik. Via Laietana, near the Cathedral, with the Atik terrace and its guests-only plunge pool on the roof. A larger hotel on the avenue, so treat the Cathedral as a nearby landmark rather than a view from your pillow.
  • Lamaro Hotel. On Avinguda de la Catedral, directly opposite the west front, with L'Àtic, a rooftop restaurant that looks onto the Cathedral. Only the Premium Suite and the Grand Master Suite are guaranteed a Cathedral view, so book one of those two if the room outlook is the point; the roof opens to non-residents for most of the day.

The honest trade

The Cathedral is a working church, and the square in front of it is among the busiest places in the old city, drawing crowds through the day and into the evening. That is what makes a view of it worth having and what makes it a poor choice for light sleepers: the same window that frames the west front also faces the square.

The building is worth ten minutes of reading before you arrive, because it explains what you are looking at. Barcelona Cathedral is essentially 13th to 15th century, but the west front most photographs show is far later, completed in the early 20th century in a Gothic idiom. The cloister, with its palm trees and its geese, is the part most visitors miss. Ask the hotel for a room on the quiet side and see the front on foot; ask for the front and see the cloister in the morning. Either way, read the quietest hotels page if sleep is a priority, and the first-timers page if this is your first Barcelona trip.
