Aparthotel Arai

Carrer d'Avinyó, 30 – a few metres from La Rambla, Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona

Aparthotel Arai occupies a historic building at Carrer d'Avinyó 30, a few metres from La Rambla in the Barri Gòtic, and is part of the Derby Hotels Collection. It is a four-star aparthotel rather than a conventional hotel: every apartment has a kitchen, and the categories run from Superior through Executive and Deluxe to Junior Suite and Jewel Suite. The roof carries a guests-only pool and a small fitness room with a sauna, and the neo-tavern Palosanto serves tapas and Catalan dishes in the same building. The Jewel Suites have a jacuzzi on a private terrace.

Why there is only one aparthotel on this page

An aparthotel means apartments with a kitchen plus hotel services: reception, cleaning, a bar or restaurant. Most Gothic Quarter addresses are one or the other — a hotel room with no kitchen, or a tourist apartment with no reception. In the 26 hotels we cover inside or on the edge of the Barri Gòtic in Barcelona, Spain, only Aparthotel Arai meets both halves of that definition, as a four-star aparthotel where every apartment has a kitchen. That is why a search for aparthotel gothic quarter has a one-item answer here, and why this page is honest about it rather than padding a list with hotels that are not aparthotels.

If you searched barrio gotico hotels or barri gotic hotels Barcelona Spain, you are in the right place: Barrio Gotico is the Spanish spelling, Barri Gòtic the Catalan one, and they are the same maze of lanes around the Cathedral.

The one: Aparthotel Arai

Aparthotel Arai stands at Carrer d'Avinyó 30, a few metres from La Rambla in the Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona, and belongs to the Derby Hotels Collection. The categories run from Superior through Executive and Deluxe to Junior Suite and Jewel Suite, and every one has a kitchen — the point of booking it rather than a conventional room.

The roof carries a guests-only pool (10:00–20:00, not heated) with a small fitness room and sauna beside it, and the Palosanto neo-tavern serves tapas and Catalan dishes in the same building. The Jewel Suites add a jacuzzi on a private terrace. The operator states the pool as guests-only and unheated, and does not state whether it is seasonal, so confirm it for a winter stay before you book around it. From around €186+ a night (September 2026 floor).

It is also the self-catering pick in our family guide and the kitchen-plus-pool pick in our rooftop-pool comparison: the pool that suits a longer stay rather than a swim.

What a kitchen saves you in the Gòtic

Three things. First, breakfast: bakery bread, market fruit from La Boqueria a few minutes away, coffee at apartment prices rather than terrace prices. Second, the middle of the day with children: lunch back at the apartment, an afternoon pool hour on the roof, then out again in the evening — the same rhythm our walking-times notes recommend, because the quarter is about twenty minutes end to end on foot. Third, a week-long stay: laundry, leftovers, a fridge for water in July and August, when Barcelona afternoons are not walking weather.

The trade is space and outlook. Medieval buildings give small rooms and inconsistent lifts; Arai has a lift, but Carrer d'Avinyó is a busy lane a few metres off La Rambla, so it is convenient rather than quiet. Read which squares are loud and our safety notes before you decide a Rambla address suits you.

If Arai is full: the closest alternatives

No other address here has a full kitchen in every room, so treat these as workarounds rather than equivalents:

  • Family rooms with space but no kitchen. H10 Racó del Pi and H10 Cubik have dedicated family rooms and lifts; Catalonia Magdalenes and Catalonia Port add seasonal pools. See hotels for families.
  • A quieter base for a long stay. If the stay is long because you work from the room, a courtyard-facing room in a quiet house matters more than a hob. Start with the quietest hotels and ask for an interior room.
  • A cheaper base for a long stay. A kitchen pays for itself over a week, but if the budget is doing the deciding, under €150 a night usually beats moving out to the suburbs once you have paid for the metro.

How to book it

Book the apartment category, not just the dates: Superior through Jewel Suite differ in terrace and jacuzzi rather than in having a kitchen, because all of them have one. If the roof pool is the reason, confirm its season for your dates. If arrival is with heavy cases, note the lane is pedestrianised at the edges — see the airport guide and ask reception for the closest taxi point.
