Couples · Barri Gòtic

The best Gothic Quarter hotels for couples

Couples get the most out of the Barri Gòtic, and the reason is structural: the quarter rewards walking, and it is the one part of Barcelona where a wrong turn at night is an improvement. These eight are the hotels whose scale, facilities and setting suit two people rather than a group.

Hotel Neri courtyard with medieval stone arches and terrace, Gothic Quarter Barcelona Exceptional
9.3 / 10 our score

Couples who want a small historic building on a quiet square and do not need a pool or a gym

Hotel Neri

Carrer de Sant Sever, 5, on Plaça Sant Felip Neri – heart of the Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona

Hotel Neri occupies a 12th-century medieval palace at Carrer de Sant Sever, 5, opening onto the small square of Plaça Sant Felip Neri, and the hotel's own site puts its size at 22 rooms and suites. The old courtyard was recovered in the restoration. The top floor is Roba Estesa, a planted terrace rather than a pool, and 'a' Restaurant on the ground floor is the only restaurant on the square, run by chef Alain Guiard. The building has no lift, so the size of the top-floor rooms and the top-floor terrace is worth checking before you book.

Serras Barcelona 5-star hotel on Passeig de Colom waterfront, Gothic Quarter Exceptional
9.4 / 10 our score

Couples who want the harbour and the sea in view from a small five-star, rather than a pool

Serras Barcelona

Passeig de Colom, 9 – waterfront at the foot of the Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona

Serras is a five-star hotel at Passeig de Colom, 9, facing the Port Vell marina, at the point where the Barri Gòtic opens onto the sea. The hotel describes itself as a small property, and the room list reflects that: Superior rooms, then a Junior Suite laid out like a loft, a Junior Suite Marina, a Suite Mediterráneo and a Grand Suite Mediterráneo with three balconies over the Mediterranean and a fourth onto the Gothic Quarter. There is a rooftop with sea and city views, a restaurant called Informal, and a bar lounge, Le Nine. The hotel states the building housed Picasso's first studio in 1896, where he painted Ciencia y Caridad; other sources place that studio on Carrer de la Plata and date the painting to 1897, so treat the location claim with caution.

What actually matters for two

Room count, first. A house of twenty-odd rooms is a different experience from a hotel of two hundred, and for a couples' trip the difference is almost always in your favour: quieter corridors, a reception that remembers you, and a bar you can sit at rather than queue for.

Roof space, second. A rooftop is where a day in Barcelona ends, and the quarter is short of other places to sit above the noise. For one evening there is a better version of it: a sunset sail out of Port Vell, with the city lights on the water instead of the lanes below. Third is a pool or a spa, not because you need one in a city with a sea, but because it is what makes an afternoon at the hotel feel like part of the holiday rather than a gap between two walks.

The eight

  • Hotel Neri. Twenty-two rooms in a 12th-century palace on Plaça Sant Felip Neri, with a planted rooftop terrace, Roba Estesa, and the only restaurant on the square, 'a', run by chef Alain Guiard. The old courtyard survived the restoration. The most romantic address in this guide, and the least convenient in one specific way: no lift.
  • Hotel DO Plaça Reial. Five-star, eighteen rooms, directly on Plaça Reial, with balcony rooms, a pool, a roof terrace, a spa, a restaurant and a bar. You are choosing the square over the sleep — it is a night-time destination — but eighteen rooms above it with a balcony is a Barcelona evening you cannot have elsewhere in the quarter.
  • Kimpton Vividora. Carrer del Duc, deep in the quarter, five-star, with the Terraza de Vivi rooftop, a pool, a spa and Fauna restaurant. Deep-in-the-quarter is the point: you are inside the maze rather than beside it.
  • Ohla Barcelona. Via Laietana, five-star design, seventy-four rooms, a rooftop pool and a landscaped inner courtyard, with junior suites at 40 and 42 square metres. The suites are why it is here: real space for two in a city of small rooms.
  • Serras Barcelona. Passeig de Colom at the foot of the quarter, five-star Grand Luxe, with a rooftop carrying both sea and city views, Le Nine bar lounge and a historic building behind it. The sea view is the differentiator, and you are ten minutes' walk from the Cathedral.
  • Mercer Hotel Barcelona. Twenty-eight rooms on Carrer dels Lledó, inside the Roman wall, with a terrace and Mercer Restaurant under chef Xavier Lahuerta. The most expensive hotel in this guide by a distance, and the quietest five-star in it.
  • Wittmore Hotel. Twenty-two rooms, adults only, on Carrer de Riudarenes off Carrer Ample, with a vertical garden in the courtyard and the Sobreático rooftop over the old town. Adults-only is the point: it keeps a small house quiet, and the restaurant Contraban is downstairs.
  • Maldà Singular Hotel. Seventeen rooms in the restored 17th-century Palau Maldà on Carrer del Pi, with a Cool Lobby and an honesty bar. The small room count is exactly what this list rewards, and the palace is a two-minute walk from the Cathedral.

Two practical notes

Book the restaurant before you book the room in the last week of September and over Christmas, when the city is at its busiest and the good tables go first. And if a balcony over a square is the plan, decide in advance whether you want the noise that comes with it — our noise notes cover Plaça Reial and the rest. If you are still narrowing the list, the quietest hotels is the natural companion page.
