Gothic Quarter hotels for a first visit to Barcelona

If you have never been to Barcelona, the Gòtic removes the hardest part of the trip: deciding where to go. Everything worth seeing on a first visit is in the quarter or a short walk from it. What matters is being inside it rather than on its edge — and knowing which edge you are on.

Why the Gòtic works on a first visit

On a three-day first trip you will want the Cathedral and the old city, La Rambla and the Boqueria, the port and Barceloneta, the Picasso Museum and Santa Maria del Mar, and one day of Gaudí. Of those, everything except the Gaudí day is within a walk of the Barri Gòtic, and several of them are within five minutes of each other.

That is the argument for paying to stay here rather than near the beach or in the Eixample. You spend the trip walking through a place rather than commuting to it, and the evening — which is when Barcelona is at its best — happens outside your door.

The seven

  • Hotel Barcelona Catedral. Carrer dels Capellans, directly behind the Cathedral, with a rooftop pool, a sun terrace with hammocks and a rooftop gym, from around €136. The location does the work of a guidebook, and it does it on foot.
  • H10 Madison. Carrer del Doctor Joaquim Pou, metres from the Cathedral, with the Cathedral in view from the roof. From around €190. Pick this if the first thing you want to see is the Cathedral, from above, with a drink in your hand.
  • Catalonia Catedral. Carrer dels Arcs, between Plaça Catalunya and the Cathedral. A seasonal rooftop pool and solarium, a mural courtyard, a Japanese garden terrace, and a location between the two most useful landmarks for a first visit.
  • Hotel Rívoli. Top of La Rambla by Plaça Catalunya, with a rooftop terrace and sky bar, a gym and 24-hour reception, from around €120. You are at the seam between the old city and the modern one, which makes buses, taxis and the metro to anywhere very easy. It is also the loudest location on this page.
  • Olivia Plaza. On Plaça Catalunya at the top of the Gòtic, four-star superior, with a restaurant-bar, 24-hour room service and concierge, a library, meeting rooms and a garden. Plaça Catalunya is where the airport bus terminates, so this is the simplest arrival in the guide — and the most transport-interchange of the settings.
  • Grand Hotel Central. Via Laietana, bordering the quarter: a 1926 landmark with a guests-only infinity rooftop pool, a wellness floor with a thermal suite and panoramic sauna, two restaurants and a historic library. The most expensive way to do a first visit, and if the trip is a one-off, the one that feels least like a compromise.
  • Yurbban Ramblas. La Rambla 129, opposite the Canaletes fountain at the top of the street, in an 1889 building, with a rooftop honesty bar above the boulevard. The simplest base if you want a Rambla address for a first trip, five minutes from Plaça Catalunya's transport.

Three things to settle before you book

Which side of the quarter. "Gothic Quarter" as a booking filter includes hotels on Via Laietana, on La Rambla and on Plaça Catalunya. All three are useful addresses and none of them feels like being inside the maze. Decide which one you are actually buying.

How you arrive. The airport bus ends at Plaça Catalunya, five to fifteen minutes on foot from most of this list. A taxi can drop you nearer, but the deepest lanes are pedestrian and the driver will stop at the nearest edge. Our airport-to-hotel guide walks through the options.

What you will do. A first visit goes much better with a shape. See our one, two and three day plans, which are written to start from a Gòtic hotel door. The port and Barceloneta are on every first-visit list, and the boat trips from the Gothic Quarter leave from the harbour at the bottom of the quarter.
