Families · Barri Gòtic

Gothic Quarter hotels for families

The Barri Gòtic is a better family base than its reputation suggests, and a worse one than its photographs suggest. Everything is walkable and nothing is far, but the streets are cobbled, the buildings are old and the lifts are not universal. These seven get the balance right.

Carrer de Ferran historic pedestrian boulevard in the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona Superb
8.5 / 10 our score

Travellers on a tight budget who need to be on foot in the middle of the quarter, and who want a private bathroom at hostal prices

Hostal Fernando

Carrer de Ferran, 31 – between La Rambla and Plaça Sant Jaume, Barri Gòtic, 08002 Barcelona

Hostal Fernando is at Carrer de Ferran, 31, between La Rambla and Plaça Sant Jaume, and it is the cheapest address in this guide. The operator's own site blocks automated access, so this page is written from Internet Archive snapshots of it taken in 2022 and 2024. Those list seven room types: Single, Double or Twin, Triple, Family, Double Superior, and dormitories for four and six adults. All rooms are air-conditioned with free Wi-Fi, and the site describes them as recently remodelled with a TV, a safe and a private bathroom. There is a Restaurant Fernando serving Spanish food, and a guest review on the site notes the renovation is complete and the lift is working.

The two things that decide a family stay here

A lift. It sounds trivial until you are on the fourth floor of a building from the 1700s with a buggy, a suitcase and a sleeping child. Where the hotel states a lift, we say so. Where it does not, treat "no lift" as the working assumption and ask.

A pool. In July and August, Barcelona afternoons are not walking weather for small children. A hotel pool, even a small seasonal one on a roof, turns three dead hours into the best part of the day. It is the single most useful facility on this page.

The seven

  • Hostal Fernando. Carrer de Ferran, between La Rambla and Plaça Sant Jaume. Private rooms and small dormitories, private bathrooms in the rooms, a lift and a restaurant downstairs. The cheapest genuinely-inside-the-quarter option, and the one to pick if the budget is doing the deciding. From around €65 a night, which leaves money for the things you actually came for.
  • Catalonia Magdalenes. Between Portal de l'Àngel and Via Laietana, with a seasonal glass pool on the roof, a solarium with Balinese beds, a spa with a jacuzzi and Turkish bath, a gym and a lift, plus Roman aqueduct remains in the building. The patio keeps street noise out of the middle of the building.
  • Catalonia Port. Carrer Ample at the foot of the quarter, beside Port Vell, with a courtyard pool and solarium, restored stone arches, a lift, and — unusually for the area — its own car park with EV charging. If you are driving to Barcelona with children, this is the one address here where that is straightforward.
  • H10 Racó del Pi. Carrer del Pi, beside Plaça del Pi, with dedicated family rooms, a naturally lit inner courtyard and one of the highest guest scores in this guide. The courtyard is the family-relevant fact: a room facing it is both quieter and darker at naptime.
  • H10 Cubik. Via Laietana, near the Cathedral, with family rooms, the Atik terrace plunge pool, a bar, and free access to an external gym a hundred metres away. You are on a main avenue, which is easier with a pram than a medieval lane.
  • H10 Madison. Carrer del Doctor Joaquim Pou, metres from the Cathedral, with family rooms and a heated rooftop plunge pool shared with the Terrace bar. Small, central and well-rated; the pool is a plunge pool rather than somewhere children can properly swim.
  • Aparthotel Arai. Carrer d'Avinyó, a few metres from La Rambla: every apartment has a kitchen, the roof carries a guests-only pool (10:00–20:00, not heated), and the Jewel Suites add a jacuzzi on a private terrace. The one address here built for a longer stay or self-catering with children.

What to plan around

Assume cobbles. A pram with small hard wheels is a poor match for the Gòtic; a carrier, or a pram with large wheels, is much easier, and the pedestrianised streets are more forgiving than the ones with kerbs.

Plan the day around the middle of it rather than the ends. The quarter's sights are close enough that you can come back to the hotel in the afternoon and go out again in the evening, which is not true of a hotel on the edge of the city — and it is the real argument for paying Gòtic prices with children in tow. For a day when the pool is not the plan, a half-day on the water fits the same shape: boat trips from the Gothic Quarter leave from Port Vell and put a swim stop in the middle of the afternoon. The first-timers page covers the same ground from a different angle, and our walking times will tell you how far you are really asking them to walk.
