Grand Hotel Central

Via Laietana, 30 – bordering the Barri Gòtic, 08003 Barcelona

About this hotel

Grand Hotel Central is a five-star hotel of 147 rooms in a building that dates from 1926, designed by the politician and art patron Francesc Cambó with the Noucentista architect Adolf Florensa. Cambó's own rooftop garden, laid out over two floors and more than 1,000 m² by the landscape gardener Jean Claude Forestier, was the first of its kind in Barcelona and is still part of the building. The top floor holds the infinity pool; the eighth holds a naturally lit gym, a wellness area with a thermal suite and a panoramic sauna; and there are two restaurants, a library and event spaces.

Vibe & style

A 1926 landmark with a genuine historic garden and a 147-room five-star roster, priced well above everything else in this guide

Pros & cons

Our read on the trade-offs — what we would book it for, and what we would want to know first.

Reasons to book

  • A 1926 building by Francesc Cambó and Adolf Florensa, not a modern infill
  • Cambó's rooftop garden, over 1,000 m² across two floors and the first rooftop garden in Barcelona, is part of the hotel
  • The infinity rooftop pool is for hotel guests only and the sunbeds are reservable in two-hour slots
  • A naturally lit eighth-floor fitness centre with Technogym and Casall equipment
  • A wellness floor with treatments by Natura Bissé and Alqvimia, a thermal suite and a panoramic sauna
  • Two restaurants, a historic library and event spaces inside a 147-room hotel

Worth knowing before you book

  • By a distance the most expensive hotel in this guide; the site publishes rates only through its booking engine
  • The rooftop pool closes at 19:00 and the rooftop kitchen at 20:30, so the roof is an evening venue rather than an all-day one
  • The base Deluxe starts at 28 m², which is small for a five-star
  • Via Laietana is a busy avenue rather than a medieval lane, so you are on the edge of the quarter rather than inside it
  • The sunbed system means you cannot simply turn up and lie down

Which room to book

The Deluxe is the entry category and starts at 28 m² with a king or twin; the Deluxe Corner is the one to book if the room itself matters, because the corner aspect is what makes a large hotel room feel like a Barcelona room. Move up to a Junior or Master Suite only if you need the separate space, since the jump in price is steep from an already high base. Note that no category here is a garden-facing bargain, and the rooftop is the hotel's main event.
