Travellers who want a genuine five-star with a Michelin-Key restaurant and a Roman-walls setting, and who are willing to pay for it
Catalonia Avinyó sits in a modern building on Carrer d'Avinyó, one of the busiest lanes in the Barri Gòtic, and the hotel's own site puts its size at more than 80 rooms. The design is of its period rather than historic: a designer lobby, a street-level cafeteria, and an interior courtyard planted as a vertical garden. Rooms run from 12 m² singles to 21 m² superiors, and the roof carries a pool and solarium. It is five minutes on foot from the Cathedral, Plaça Reial and La Rambla, and under ten from El Born.
A deliberately modern, design-led chain hotel on a loud shopping street, with a seasonal rooftop pool and a planted courtyard at ground level
Our read on the trade-offs — what we would book it for, and what we would want to know first.
Book a Superior if you want space: at 21 m² it is the first category with a separate living area and a sofa. The Superior with terrace adds a 9 m² furnished terrace and is the only version here with private outdoor space. If you would rather face the street, the 21 m² Double with Avinyó views is the sensible pick, and the hotel describes those rooms as soundproofed. Avoid the 12 m² Single unless you are travelling alone with a small bag.
